Marnie Sconce

Garden Designer

About the designer: Marnie, of Marnie's Garden Design, has a life long love of plants, gardening and the environment. She loved redesigning her family's residential gardens of Redbank Estate North Richmond NSW so much that she wanted to design garden spaces for others. After learning the process of garden design through the Australian Academy of Garden Design she is ready to design a garden for you.

If you enjoy the garden design process and wish to study garden design yourself, Marnie now teaches garden design through the Australian Academy of Garden Design.

Gardening has always been an outlet for Marnie, she loves thinking about where plants should grow and what they will provide us. She is teaching her children to love plants for the animals they invite into our gardens, the flowers, food, shade, privacy and joy they can bring to us all.

Education: Postgraduate diploma of garden design;

  Bachelor Science (nutrition);

  Bachelor of Teaching (secondary)

What we do

We will design a garden for any sized space; a small section of your block, or for your entire outdoor space. No matter if you wish to build it yourself or have a professional landscape team build it for you.

We will follow design and landscaping guidelines from your Estate, Council and State to ensure your gardens and landscaping follow the requirements of your area.

Specialising in designing gardens for Redbank Estate, North Richmond, of the Hawkesbury region of New South Wales, Australia. We are more than happy to consult with those outside of the area.

The Process

The design process usually takes 3 or 4 weeks for the average-sized building block (up to 600sqm).

1. Initial consultation: This will usually take up to an hour. Ideally, we will visit the site to be designed and talk to you about how you wish to use the space, your general likes and dislikes about colour schemes, themes, feel for the space and who is going to use the space.

Any existing plans are always beneficial when a space is being designed. This will help us identify any sight lines from windows, easements, services, orientation...

The space would be measured, noting any existing features that will impact the design.

Photos would be taken to help remember everything in its place.

A quote for the cost will be given, payment is required after the design process is complete (see below for further detail on pricing).

2. Moodboard: Within a day or two of the initial consultation, a moodboard would be sent to you usually via email with the general direction that the designer is going. There may be details such as colour schemes, focal point suggestions, theme, yet the overall mood or feel of the space is communicated. Images from pinterest are primarily adapted for this part of the process.

Once the moodboard is received via email, take time to analyse its contents and provide feedback (likes, dislikes, further options - written or images) to the designer.

3. Concept Map: A first sketch of the layout drawn to scale, noting where all of the elements will be and their size/s.

This drawing will not include details such as planting, irrigation, lighting, paving choice. It will include garden beds, turf, pathway, driveway, fences, boundaries... and will provide the opportunity to change the layout of the space before the details are added.

4. Planting list: Many clients like to proof read the planting list before it is used in the final plan. It will give the opportunity to edit the list, again much easier before the final plan is completed. You may skip this step if you wish.

5. Working plan/Final plan/Landscape design plan: A working plan/final plan is for an existing dwelling, and will not necessarily need to be approved by a design team, certifier or council. A Landscape design plan is for a proposed dwelling or new build and will need additional details for a design team, certifier or council to approve.

The working plan provides all of the information about the area being designed so that it can be built to the designer's specifications. It includes all choices such as planting, lighting, paving, paint colour, choice of materials for the entire space all drawn to scale. The working plan will be provided to you in both digital and hard copy, and accompanied by a full report outlining details of the site, construction of the garden areas, suggestions of where to source planting and materials and how to look after your garden into the future.

6. Elevations/sections/3D view: these are optional and will come at an additional cost. You may choose to add this option to help you to visualise the space or have a greater understanding of how it is to be built.

Cost

The cost of a design will depend on the size of the area being designed, the complexity of the design and the drawings required.

A general rule of thumb used to calculate the cost is $100 per 100sqm plus a drawing fee (which will depend on the complexity of the design and types of drawing/s required).
